Prepare the tow vehicle first. Engage the emergency brake, then put the transmission in park, so the truck rests on the brake and not on the transmission.

2. Do a walk around before you start. Check the trailer, ramps, tracks and machine.

3. Mind the drive motors. On a steep ramp, plan so the drive motors, where the machine's power is, stay on the ground and are never up in the air. On a gentle angle it matters less, but with a steep deck over trailer it is better to turn around and approach the other way.

4. Use the bucket and boom. Set the boom and bucket out in front so the arm helps pull and steady the machine as you climb on.

5. Watch the weather. Wet steel ramps, wet tracks and wet ground are slippery. Take it slow if the machine slides.

6. Do not teeter totter. Once you are up, drive all the way forward so the machine is settled on the trailer instead of balancing on the angle.

7. Nervous about the angle? Find a low spot and back the trailer into it so the trailer sits lower, or use the excavator to dig a pit for the trailer tires. Just make sure your truck can pull itself out of the hole.

Like anything with these machines, practice makes it easy. Once you are comfortable with the controls, excavators are very capable, and loading becomes routine.

Questions?
